AHC Trustees Appoint Alejandra Enciso Medina to Fill Board Vacancy

JUNE 16, 2021 -- The Allan Hancock Joint Community College District Board of Trustees voted to appoint Alejandra Enciso Medina of Guadalupe to fill its vacant Area 3 seat during a special meeting on June 15.
Medina was one of two applicants interviewed at the meeting by the board to fill the seat. The seat was vacated by longtime trustee Larry Lahr, who resigned from the position in April due to a move outside of the Area 3 district boundaries.
“We are very grateful that a community member like Alejandra stepped up and applied to fill this seat and help the board continue the important work of changing the odds for our students,” said Hancock Superintendent/President Kevin G. Walthers, Ph.D. “Her commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion make her an excellent addition to the board and the college.”
Medina currently works as a lead bilingual reproductive health and life skills educator for the nonprofit CommUnify of Santa Barbara County. Medina served as a board member for the Future Leaders of America (FLA) and Danza Azteca Coaxochitl, and served as a volunteer educator for H.O.P.E. Santa Maria.
Medina is a first-generation Latinx-American and also a first-generation college graduate. She graduated from Hancock with an associate degree in liberal arts and received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Medina is the first trustee from Guadalupe and her appointment creates a board with majority of women for the first time in the college’s 100-year history.
“My lifelong goal is to educate others about my culture and advocate for equality and justice,” said Medina. “I could not have done this without the support of the community and all the mentors I have had along the way.”
The Area 3 trustee represents Southwestern Santa Maria and Guadalupe. As an appointee, Medina will serve out the remainder of Lahr’s term, which ends in November 2022. For more information about the Board of Trustees, visit www.hancockcollege.edu/board.
